Collective Bargaining update
February 8, 2010

During the week of January 25th, your Local 2000 Bargaining Committee met with the company to continue to work towards a new Collective Agreement. As was outlined in previous communications, these meetings were assisted by a federally appointed conciliator. At the conclusion of our bargaining session, all of the deepest concessions proposed by the company remain on the table.

* Erosion of current language giving the company greater ability to contract out CAW work.
* Temporary layoffs ranging from 1 month to 1 year.
* Members pay out of pocket for 25% of ALL medical benefits with NO UPPER LIMIT.
* Reduction of overtime, standby and restoral call-out pay.
* 30% reduction of ERSA/EVSA (early retirement/severance) payments.
* Erosion of seniority rights (eg. job postings, ERSA/EVSA payouts).
* Layoff rights reduced to a maximum of 18 months.

All of this without an offer for any pay increase over the life of the agreement.

Needless to say, your Bargaining Committee flatly rejected the company's proposal.

Very shortly, your Regional Union VP will announce membership meetings in your area. I realize that we all lead busy lives outside of work. I realize that many of us have never been to a union meeting in the past. However, if you care about how your rights and your future, you can not afford to sit by and allow your rights and quality of life to be taken away.

The time has come for our membership to consider the dire impact these concessions would have. Should our employer continue to undervalue the hard work our membership brings each and every day, WE MUST SPEAK WITH ONE VOICE and say "NO" to these deep concessions!

In other news, the leadership of IBEW Local 435 (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers), the United Steelworkers union Local 1976 and CAW Local 2000 came together on February 3rd to grow our bond of solidarity and discuss ongoing matters related to the prosperity of all our respective members.

On behalf of the membership and Executive of Local 2000, I'd like to express our thanks and pledge our solidarity to them now and in the future.

If you have further questions, please contact your local Shop Steward, Regional Vice President or myself.

In Solidarity,

Dylan Gadwa
President - CAW Local 2000
